What are human rights? 
Are they the same around the world? 
Does the Canadian government have a position on it?

Here are your tasks:
  1. Read, listen to, and watch this presentation.
  2. Write 5 T/F statements.

  • -Human rights define what we are all entitled to — a life of equality, dignity, and respect.
  • There are several ways that a person could be discriminated against. The Canadian Human Rights Act calls these discriminatory practices. The following seven discriminatory practices are prohibited by the Canadian Human Rights Act when they are based on one or more of the 11 grounds of discrimination
  • In such cases, the duty to accommodate may require that alternative arrangements be made to ensure full participation of the person. In other words, it may be necessary to treat someone differently in order to ensure equality.
  • Harassment is a form of discrimination. It involves any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you.do not ignore harassment. Report it. If you fear for your safety, or the safety of others, contact the police.
  • The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms of 1982 is part of Canada’s Constitution. The Charter protects every Canadian’s right to be treated equally under the law. The Charter guarantees broad equality rights and other fundamental rights such as the freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion.

    1. Write 10 T/F statements after reading.
  1. A payment voluntarily made or left by an employee to a customer 
  2. Employers should be explicit about who and what that money is intended for (e.g., tips for servers or facilities charges).
  3. Employers can not decide if tipping is allowed in their businesses.
  4. Employers are required to distribute tips and other gratuities to employees in cash, cheque or direct deposit.
  5.  Do not post the policy in the workplace where employees can see it.
  6. Employers are not allowed to keep the tips and other gratuities that they receive themselves.
  7. Making an employee return his or her tips to the employer if the tips were earned and received after June 10, 2016. 
  8. A tip pool is a collection of employees’ tips that is redistributed among some or one of the employer’s employees.
